Paediatric osteopathy can play an important part of establishing health in a baby. Newborn baby checks form a large part of our work and many parents bring their unsettled or upset babies for problems that arise after a few weeks. We use the very gentle and effective cranial osteopathy techniques on babies to help relieve pain and discomfort.

Typical symptoms of discomfort in a baby are

  • crying
  • being unhappy or irritable for long periods of time
  • difficulty falling or staying asleep
  • showing signs of digestive discomfort
  • preferring to feed on one side

With baby’s being laid on their backs to sleep we are noticing more cases of distortion and assymetry in babies head shapes, often with flattening (known as plagiocephaly), occuring on one side. Osteopaths are able to asses the whole body and advise on the causes and management of this flattening.

Many of the babies we see in our clinic come from personal recommendations by other parents. We also receive many referrals from professionals involved with infant care and have good working relations with midwives, health visitors and breast feeding counsellors. Babies are often brought in for osteopathy sessions after very quick or long births or an assisted delivery.

If you have a baby that has difficulty settling or is uncomfortable, why not give us a call for a friendly informal chat to see if osteopathic treatment might help or to book an appointment.
