Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a referral from my GP?

Although referral by a GP is not necessary before visiting an osteopath, we do encourage keeping your GP fully informed, so that your medical records are current and complete and also to ensure your receive the best possible care from both health professionals. With your permission, we usually send a brief report to your GP with details of your condition and treatment. You can also request a letter for your employer if this is helpful.

Much of our time during our 4 year full time osteopathy training is spent learning basic medical skills so that we are competent to make a diagnosis and if necessary, liaise with your GP for further tests. We find more and more GP’s are referring patients to osteopaths, as some complaints may respond better to osteopathy than to conventional treatments.
