Posture tips for mums… part 2

Posture tips for mums… part 2

Carrying
– Try not to slouch or ‘collapse’ your spine, keep your back and neck straight and shoulders pulled back
– Always hold your child close to your body
– Try to carry your child in the centre of your body
– If you do need to hold your child in one arm, try not to thrust your hip out to one side to balance the child on your hip. Instead, try to keep your pelvis and back in line with each other and your core (core stability) muscles strong
– Try to keep your wrists in neutral
– When carrying a car seat, try to alternate which arm you use. Carry the car seat on your forearm, do not let it hang from the end of your arm. If possible, carry the car seat in the centre of your body hugging it with both arms. Be careful of twisting whilst carrying the car seat Avoid carrying the car seat away from your body

Pushchairs and prams
– Try to keep your back straight, chin up and your shoulders back. You may need to be closer to the pushchair or pram than you think
– Try to aim for a pushchair or pram which has an adjustable handle height. This will help with keeping an upright posture
– Keep your arms slightly bent, do not lock your elbows
– Try to keep your wrists straight
– Use your whole body to move the pushchair or pram, not just your arms
